Early 20th Century Chinese Hardstone-Inlaid Wooden Casket – Late Qing / Republic Period – Carved Floral Panels, Brass Fittings & Games Contents

A striking early 20th-century Chinese hardstone-inlaid wooden casket, described as Late Qing Dynasty / Republic Period, measuring approximately 22 cm wide.

The casket is constructed from dark polished hardwood and features three highly decorative carved and pierced hardstone floral panels to the lid, comprising a central green panel flanked by two pink/red panels. The panels are intricately carved with scrolling foliage and floral decoration and provide an attractive contrast against the dark timber.

The box is fitted with decorative brass hinges, clasp and mounts, with further engraved/decorative detail visible to the hardware. The interior is divided into fitted compartments and currently contains a quantity of vintage/antique dominoes or gaming pieces, together with a small boxed playing-card/game item. The contents are included with the casket and are sold as photographed.

The construction, decorative technique and fittings are consistent with an early 20th-century Chinese decorative casket, and it has been described as Late Qing/Republic period. The exact type and composition of the hardstone used in the decorative panels has not been independently tested or certified.

The casket has acquired age-related wear commensurate with its age and previous use, including scratches, surface marks, rubbing and areas of wear to the timber and brass fittings. There is visible wear and deterioration around some of the hinges/fittings, and the decorative hardstone panels show signs of age, including small losses/chips and surface wear. Please study all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description.

Measurements: approximately 22 cm wide.

Condition: Used/antique condition with age-related wear, marks, chips/losses and deterioration to fittings as shown. Both hinges are missing 4 pin nails and will need repairing. Provenance: Offered from a private collection.
